Electrocautery (or electrocauterization) is the process of heating tissue with electricity. It is often used in surgery to remove unwanted or harmful tissue. It can also be used to burn and seal blood vessels. It is a safe procedure. A small probe with an electric current running through it is used to burn or destroy the tissue.
It treats warts, skin tags, dermatosis papulosa nigra, seborrheic keratosis, actinic keratosis, solar keratosis, age spots and hyperpigmentation.
Following the treatment, swelling develops within 30 minutes and usually lasts for a day. A reddish ring appears around the treated lesion and persists for 2-3 days. The tissue will have discoloration in 5-7 days and will slough off in 10-14 days. Complete healing without scar formation can be seen in 3 to 6 weeks. However, it is possible that the surrounding area can have hypopigmentation, depending on your skin type.
