Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) also known as the Blood Facelift, is a non-surgical treatment for hair loss and skin rejuvenation. It utilizes the body’s platelets to stimulate healing in treated areas.
Our platelets store a rich supply of growth factors. When activated, platelets release these growth factors that have the potential to restore many types of tissue. Many medical specialties have found applications for this treatment, particularly in injured muscles and joints. In dermatology and cosmetic surgery, PRP has found success in hair restoration and collagen stimulation for skin rejuvenation (face, neck/decolletage, cellulite areas like stomach and thighs). The body reacts to the treated cells as it does to a wound and immediately starts repairing the tissue. This builds the underlying tissue with tightening, smoothing, and increased blood flow (which makes the color more attractive)
Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy takes less than an hour. The patient’s blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge for 14-15 minutes to separate out the platelets. Either a potent anesthetic cream is applied or lidocaine is injected regionally to numb the areas. PRP is then injected into the desired treatment area to harness the body’s own healing properties. Microneedling will enhance its effect.
Most patients experience mild to moderate swelling, redness, warmth and soreness which are all common side effects and part of the activation of your platelets. Bruising may occur and can take several days to disappear.
You should see improvements immediately, although there is usually a return to prior treatment status in 3-5 days as the water is absorbed and prior to the complete action of the cellular regenerative process. Within 2-4 weeks you will see improvement with continued changes for 12 weeks. There's actual growth of new tissue by stimulation of uni-potent stem cells, so the change is not from something foreign being in the body but from the body actually rejuvenating and growing. The platelet-rich fibrin matrix stimulates new blood flow with new blood vessels (neovascularization). The results of this treatment can last, but results may vary and research documenting the longevity or results are ongoing.
PRP is safe and as it is made of your own body cells, causes virtually no risk of rejection or reaction. Women who are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying to conceive are not suitable candidates. This is not recommended in people on blood thinners, autoimmune conditions, have suffered any type of cancer or who have certain implants in the treatment area. Your past and present medical history, as well as your past cosmetic history will be assessed to determine your suitability.
